More winter sun would definitely be a great idea. Despite the deluges over Christmas and the New Year holiday, we saw bees out during sunny spells – seems they need a bit of fresh air just like us humans. It’s going to be a great season for catkins. These are the flowers of our namesake the Filbert bush, which grows all around us and provides an early pollen source. In sheltered spots the catkins have already burst from the tightly woven buds to become fluffly “lamb’s tails”. Before we know it, May will be with us, bringing first honey (if we’re lucky) and the inevitable bee swarms.
